These little kitchen gadgets usual run anywhere from $20 to $150. While you can get away with a hand held wand foamer (these will not heat the cream/milk!), you might find that a countertop foamer might be much more convenient for your morning rituals.
We personally prefer the countertop versions as they have the features I look for (warm milk, delicious foam, easy to use).
What Does a Milk Frother Do?
Milk frothers add convenience when making cappuccinos, hot chocolate and lattes. They will essentially heat up the milk and whip it up so that air gets into the milk or cream. Depending on the type of frother they might perform a little differently. They also let you practice pouring beautiful latte art.
Most Common Types of Frothers and Their Uses
Electric milk frothers are the most common types of frothers that you’ll see on the market.
An electric milk frother usually consists of a powerbase, a carafe for milk, and a whisk that is either attached to the base or tight fitting lid.
They’re our favorite as they are packed with useful features such as various settings to heat milk up to, automatic shut off, easy to clean/dishwasher-safe carafes and an easy to follow measurement system.
Electric milk frothers are also much more durable than the other types of frothers.
Handheld wand milk frothers are one of the most common and affordable milk frothers, it’s essentially a hand wand with a little whisk on the bottom.
You’ll have to heat your milk up elsewhere, stovetop or microwave, after that you’ll be able to use the wand in your mug or a proper measuring cup to produce the foam you want.
This is a great option for people who want control of how much foam they want, it’s a great tool with lots of flexibility.

The induction heating system is so great for distributing heat effectively without scalding the milk. The Breville heating system is by far our favorite feature as you will use the adjustable temperature dial which allows for cold stir, warm, optimum temperature & hot.

The Secura Milk Frother is a top rated milk frother. For the price, and the amount of features you get, it’s a pretty great buy.
It comes in two different sizes, 250ml and 500ml. If you’re a single person just looking to make a cappucino or latte for yourself the 250ml version might be enough. The 500ml one is more of family size unit but you aren’t restricted to only using 500ml. It will heat and whisk any amount you give it.
While the overall temperature of the frother doesn’t quite reach the temperature of the Breville Milk Cafe but it will do for most people. This unit will heat milk up to 135°F – 150°F.
Some take away features that we liked were that it comes with a free cleaning brush, has a detachable base which made the unit very easy to clean.
The Secura Milk Frother comes in second to the Breville Milk Cafe but is still a good milk frother for the price. If you don’t need the versatility and extra features that the Breville has then we suggest you check this one out!
